I’m As Mad As Hell, and I’m Not Going To Take This Anymore!

Peter Finch

A quote often heard and attributed to actor Peter Finch in the movie Network is:

I’m As Mad As Hell, and I’m Not Going To Take This Anymore!

That’s exactly what I wanted to say when I woke this morning to the news of more mass shootings. What is this country coming to? What is the answer to this painful failure of society?

Stealing another line from Finch, he did say,

I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter.”

That was the 70’s but some of it is still true today. To bring that quote up to date, I would say, “The dollar buys a penny’s worth, just about everyone has a gun and people are shooting people like life is just an arcade game.”

Even though I have all this anger about these shootings, I am encouraged knowing that the majority of people are civil and kind. I’m sure you are just as upset as I am but what are we going to do about it? It is not going to be solved by confiscating guns. This is a problem with society.

Well, for one thing, we can get vocal. Very vocal. And be sure to recognize these mass shooters as the cowards they are – sick, sick cowards.

Finch thought he had the answer. He told the audience,

“So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out, and yell, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’”

You can start with that – open the window and tell the world. But, I don’t think that is going to do much good.

Call your representatives. Talk with your neighbors and friends. And above all, let our local first responders know how much you appreciate their efforts to keep Semmes safe.

Still mad,

Terry Platt
