Sepsis Awareness Month

Sepsis Awareness Month

Despite the fact that sepsis affects more than a million Americans each year and kills up to half of them, a new survey published by Sepsis Alliance found that fewer than half of all Americans have ever even heard of the term ‘sepsis.’

Brooklyn Bridge Opens In 1883

After 14 years and 27 deaths while being constructed, the Brooklyn Bridge over the East River is opened, connecting the great cities of New York and Brooklyn for the first time in history. Thousands of residents of Brooklyn and Manhattan Island turned out to witness the dedication ceremony, which was presided over by President Chester A. Arthur and New York Governor Grover Cleveland. Designed by the late John A. Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge was the largest suspension bridge ever built to that date.

Semmes Fire Chief Kevin Brooks Takes New Fire Trucks For A Few Laps at Daytona International Speedway

Semmes Fire Rescue To Purchase Two New Pumpers

Semmes Fire Rescue received city council approval to purchase two new fire trucks at last night’s City Council meeting. The funding request passed with all council members voting for approval. Delivery of the new trucks is anticipated in sixty days or less. In early February, Mayor David Baker encouraged Fire Chief Kevin Brooks to accelerate his fire vehicle replacement plan due to continued growth of the city’s residential and business areas and the city’s ongoing efforts to further improve the city’s ISO rating. Chief Brooks located two suitable fire engines available for purchase on fire-fighting duty at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida.

Purple Paint

Posted: 09 Aug 2017 11:27 AM PDT

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE COLOR PURPLE? Most of us are familiar with the “POSTED: NO TRESPASSING” signs that appear throughout the county. Under the former Alabama trespass law, an intruder upon rural, unfenced property was not necessarily a trespasser unless “notice against trespass is personally communicated to him by the owner of such land or another authorized person, or unless such notice is given by posting in a conspicuous manner.” BUT NOW, landowners have another option: PURPLE PAINT. The definition of “posting in a conspicuous manner” now includes painting vertical stripes of purple paint upon trees or posts along the property line. The full definition of the new posting rule is listed below:

A sign or signs posted on the property, reasonably likely to come to the attention of intruders, indicating that entry is forbidden or the placement of identifying purple paint marks on trees or posts on the property, provided that the marks satisfy all of the following:

* Are vertical lines of not less than eight inches in length and not less than one inch in width.

Semmes Fire Rescue Accepts ABC Kindergarten Challenge: Semmes Fire Training Center - Friday, March 17, 2017

Firefighters Accept ABC Kindergarten Challenge

Early this morning Semmes Fire Rescue, with backup from Mobile Fire Department, greeted an onslaught of 140 children, 77+ accompanying family members, kindergarten teachers and numerous support personnel. All converged on the Semmes Fire Training Center to view a fire-fighting demonstration by their local fire-fighting heros and participate in a little hands-on training with fire-fighting equipment. The 200+ group were on a field trip scheduled by ABC Kindergarten, a learning preschool and kindergarten in Semmes Alabama.   Children and adults alike learned about fire safety and got to explore fire vehicles and equipment. Semmes Sparky mingled with the kids while other firefighters donned full rescue gear (boots, gloves, goggles, helmet, hood, etc.) while wide-eyed children watched with curious eyes.

The Station #1 Incident Of 2016

Everyone wants to know what happened at the Semmes Volunteer Fire Department Station #1 today – the station on Wulff Road. I arrived to find three or four Sheriff’s Deputies and about twenty or so local citizens. All were just hanging out, getting reacquainted and talking of the prior activities they participated in at this very station. Most were asking the same question you have asked, “What’s going on.” The crowd continued to grow until there were probably 75 to 100 people at the station.
