Providence Hospital Appoints Chief Medical Officer for the Providence Medical Group
MOBILE, Ala.– Providence Health System announced that Ijaz Iqbal, MD, FACP, Chief Medical Officer of Providence Health System, will also serve as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Providence Medical Group. In this dual role, Dr. Iqbal will serve as the clinical leader responsible for helping create stronger relationships between the medical practices and hospital, and lead quality initiatives across Providence Health System.
“We felt that the opportunity to create this unique dual role would allow greater synergy and alignment across the health system,” said Todd Kennedy, President and CEO of Providence Hospital. Providence Medical Group is a network of primary care and specialty physicians with over 20 locations and more than 70 physicians and certified nurse practitioners serving South Alabama and Southern Mississippi.
“As CMO of Providence Hospital, Dr. Iqbal has been instrumental in helping improve many quality measures, most notably leading an initiative to decrease sepsis, a potentially life-threatening complication that is the result of an infection,” said Dr. Tim Bode, Chief Clinical Officer for Ascension Alabama. “Because of his leadership, Providence now has one of the lowest rates of sepsis and patient mortality in the Ascension network.”
Dr. Iqbal has been at Providence for nine years, serving as Medical Director for six years prior to being appointed to his current role as CMO in 2017. Before joining Providence, he served as the Medical Director for Infirmary West Hospital, Department of Hospital Medicine, for almost three years. Dr. Iqbal also worked as an internal medicine physician for nine years in Bayou La Batre at the Mostellar Medical Center.
Dr. Iqbal holds a medical degree from Allama Iqbal Medical College at the University of Punjab in Lahore, Pakistan and completed his residency and internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.
