Escatawpa Hollow Campground
In April of 2019, the Mobile County Commission purchased Escatawpa Hollow Campground, a 45-acre tract of land adjacent to the Escatawpa River at the Alabama/Mississippi state line located south of US Hwy 98 (Moffett Road). The County utilized $715,000 of its Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) funds for the purchase. GOMESA funds are derived from royalties that the county receives from federal oil and gas leases in Alabama’s offshore waters and are expended to support land and water conservation and hurricane protection programs.
The Campground was closed to the public following the purchase to allow for a needs assessment and the development of a master plan focused on improving waterfront access in Mobile County-owned parks. The plan, which will solicit public input, will guide renovations and improvements to existing park facilities. The process of developing the master plan and obtaining public input for Escatawpa Hollow Campground along with the design and construction phases of the project is expected to take up to 18 months from this point to complete.
