The Grumpy Old Men Are Pissed!
Well, true to their word, the Semmes City Council is taking immediate action to curb what they see as wrong-doing by Mayor Hale.
Talk Of Semmes just received notice of two “Special Called Meeting.” As provided by state law, two or more city council members can call for a special called city council meeting. It also appears that the Semmes City Council is up-to-date on Alabama statutes as they called for two special called city council meetings – one on Thursday, September 15th at 6:00 pm and a second on Friday, September 16th at 3:00 pm.
If my understanding of the state statutes is correct, the mayor has the right to veto any resolution passed by the city council on its first occurance in the council but if the same resolution is brought forward in a subsequent city council meeting, the mayor cannot veto a resolution passed by the majority of the city council.
The following Semmes City Council members signed the notices for special meeting:
Howard L. Smith, Councilman, Place 2
Lawrence Webb, Councilman, Place 3
Jerry Shirey, Councilman, Place 5
Collectively and affectionately known by some as “The Grumpy Old Men.”
These city council meetings are open to the public. Talk Of Semmes will live broadcast on Facebook if conditions permit.
Correction: From Ms. Vickie Shirey: The mayor doesn’t have authority to veto. She can, however, vote against immediate consideration.
