A Sullivan Road family fled their burning home some time shortly after 7:00 p.m. last night, Friday, March 3, 2017. Chief Kevin Brooks of Semmes Fire Rescue stated that upon arrival, fire fighters found the home’s occupants safely outside the home which sustained heavy fire damage. Semmes Fire Rescue had the flames beat down within 4 minutes and no calls were made for assistance. The state fire marshal was called in to investigate the cause of the fire.
SO HAPPY for this update from Mayor Baker. There is real fear and concern among the citizenry. I have tried to assure the folks that the situation is not, nor would ever be, as hopeless as some would have us believe. To think that we would be completely without fire or EMS service is ludicrous. There is concern that the returning councilman and council elect will not take office due to ethic violations.
SEMMES MAYOR-ELECT DAVID BAKER
ANNOUNCES HIS PUBLIC SAFETY PLAN
After consulting with firemen, concerned citizens, and attorneys, Mayor-Elect David Baker today announced his plans and proposals for a much-improved Fire and Rescue Service to serve all of the residents now being served, but with faster response times, a more stable workforce, and newer equipment. The long-serving, much-appreciated, Semmes Volunteer Fire Department of the past exists today in name only. Only three volunteers remain. Now, professional City-paid crews man the three Semmes stations around the clock. Our Public Safety Committee will work closely with the Fire Chief and other members of the Fire Department to develop a list of urgent priorities, starting with personal safety equipment for all firemen. I would like to bring those needs to the Council for action as soon as possible.
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Good Stuff Cheap
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet will open at the corner of Moffett Road (Hwy 98) and Schillinger Road on October 5th and will initially employ around 22 people from Semmes and our immediate area. During the store setup, up to fifty-five people, local and otherwise, have been preparing for the grand opening. Ollie’s advertises itself as an extreme value retailer of brand name merchandise at drastically reduced prices and although specifics were not given, they thoroughly research potential markets and identified Semmes Alabama as a rapidly growing market. Talk Of Semmes was given an early morning tour of the store this morning, Saturday, October 1st, and we went looking for “Good Stuff Cheap.” We experienced isle after isle of brand name products, including housewares, food, books and stationery, bed and bath, floor coverings, toys and hardware. Ollie’s is different if no reason other than the brightly lit store and colorful signage reminiscent of earlier times when in-store signs were colorful and fun.
FEMA App Helps You Prepare as Hurricane Season Heats Up
ATLANTA, Ga. — With FEMA’s updated free app you can get weather alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations across the nation. You can receive alerts on severe weather happening anywhere in the country, even if your phone is not located in the area. That makes it easy to follow severe weather that may be threatening your family and friends, especially now as the height of hurricane season approaches. “Emergency responders and disaster survivors are increasingly turning to mobile devices to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters,” said Craig Fugate, FEMA administrator.
